Two Capitol Police officers were injured, one fatally, on Friday when a car crashed into a barricade outside an entrance to the Capitol, the agency said.

The barricade where the car crashed is located on Constitution Avenue across the street from Senate office buildings. On Friday afternoon, when the House and Senate were out of session, staffers were notified that the complex was on lockdown due to an "external security threat."

Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee confirmed in a news conference that one officer had died and a suspect also died after being shot by law enforcement.

"It is with a very, very heavy heart that I announced one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries," Pittman said. The officer's identity has not yet been made public.

Footage captured by Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich showed the aftermath of the scene:

After the injured officers had been transported to the hospital, National Guard troops were deployed to the scene.

On the east side of the Capitol, meanwhile, Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman caught a stunning and rare scene of a helicopter landing on camera.

Here's where the car crashed into the barricades, which were erected for extra security after the January 6 insurrection:
